In the Old Testament, God commanded the Israelites to bring their firstfruits to him. This was not a gift of their best – it was a gift of their first. Laying the very first of a year’s harvest at Yahweh’s feet was an act of trust that he would take care of all other needs.
Our Firstfruits
Our harvest may differ, but we still have firstfruits to lay at Jesus’ feet. Our greatest offering is often our time.
Feeling as if we have precious little time, we start the day clinging to every moment. What if we were to instead entrust our time to Christ, offering him the first moments of our day and trusting him with the remainder?
By starting each day at the feet of Jesus, we do not check off the “quiet time” box or attain a legalistic marker of spirituality. Instead, we find our focus. We open our minds to the Lord’s perspective. We see the day, our families, and every circumstance through the eyes of Christ. And, as a result, we gain a clarity that seems to multiply the time remaining to us each day.
But how do we start the day at the feet of Jesus?
Prayer
Instead of starting each morning pondering the fullness of the day, focus on prayer. Surrender every thought to Jesus and offer the sacrifice of worship.
Journaling
It is easy to read the Bible without truly processing what we read. Whether through coherent sentences, scribbled words, or vivid pictures, journaling allows true processing of God’s Word as you read.
Meditation
Biblical truths are meant to be lived out. Take time to meditate on the practical implications of what the Spirit has spoken to your heart through prayer and the Word.
Make time today by offering the firstfruits of your time to Christ. See what miracle he can work with what’s left!
