High school elective options abound if you know how and where to seek them! Here are some ways to fill high school elective credits – and have fun doing it!
Finding Ideas
Sometimes it’s hard to know where to begin when determining what electives to take. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Check state graduation requirements and required electives for the top three colleges on your list.
- Pursue electives related to a specific career or field of study that piques your interest.
- Choose electives that will stretch you and build skills in areas of weakness.
Finding Elective Classes
Now that you’ve thought through these questions, where can you find some of the elective classes you need or are interested in? Here are some ideas other homeschoolers have used.
- For more common courses, such as health or home economics, curriculum or video courses will likely be readily available.
- Check out what is already available through your local homeschool co-op. If a class you are interested in isn’t already available, ask if it would be possible to add it to the course list. Others may be interested as well.
- Consider teaming up with a few other homeschool families. Maybe your parents could trade off teaching electives that they are skilled in.
- Sign up for classes through your local YMCA or take advantage of the summer sports leagues your town offers.
- Museums or art centers often offer a variety of art experiences, including drama opportunities. Or check out your local community theater.
- Don’t overlook extended family, church family, or friends. You might find someone among them willing to share their knowledge with you.
Carefully chosen electives will help enrich your high school experience. Be creative and have fun choosing them.
