My Children’s School Is Closed…Now What?

If you find yourself suddenly homeschooling due to the school closings for COVID-19 prevention, you may be feeling overwhelmed with what to do. Even if you never imagined yourself homeschooling, be encouraged that, with the resources currently available, any parent or guardian can take up this worthy endeavor.

Building a flexible routine or schedule is one of the most helpful steps you can take to lay a solid foundation for homeschooling success. To help you get started with this, we’ve put together a customizable daily schedule, as well as a sample schedule you can use to keep your kids’ learning on track!

For help making your daily schedule, check out this example:

9:00-9:45 Prayer, Songs, Devotions
9:45-10:30 Outdoor time: play in the backyard, walk the dog, ride bikes.
10:30-11:30 Academic time*: Read, flash cards, journal

11:30-12:30 Creative time: play instruments, have a dance party, make a craft, a baked treat, a Lego creation, etc.
12:30-1:00 Lunch
1:00-1:30 Chore time: Give each child a disinfectant cloth or wipe and assign them to a room.
1:30-2:15 Quiet alone time: No technology! Naps are encouraged.
2:15-4:00 Academic time*: Read or write for language arts. Practice math facts. Pick an area on the map and learn about it for geography. Learn about types of illnesses and ways to prevent sickness for science. Pick something that interests your child and learn its origin story for history.
4:00-4:45: Outdoor time: Regular outdoor time will help everybody from feeling stir-crazy.
